Did Ed Sullivan care whether performers lipsynched?
Yes, and some bands had strong feelings about it
The act of rebellion from The Mamas & The Papas is a nice showcase. They were forced to lip-synch California Dreaming when appearing on the show in 1967. They were not happy about it, and decided to stage a little protest.
While “performing” on live TV, they made it painfully clear they were just miming
[1].
Michelle Phillips is munching a banana mid “singing”.
John Phillips is casually chatting away during the chorus. The lyrics during the gif bellow are just “California dreaming”.
Also his guitar is not plugged in.
And the mikes are nowhere near them while singing.
In their defense, they never said they are good at miming. They are just good at singing.
