On November 3, 1957, Sam Cooke was the last act on The Ed Sullivan Show. After Ed introduced him, Sam walked out looking really cool. The music started, and he began singing “Darling, you-ou-ou send me. I know…”. But the show had gone over time, and it was live TV, so it ended right after his performance.

The show got so many complaints about cutting him off that they decided to bring him back. So, on December 1, 1957, Sam returned to perform again. Ed Sullivan introduced him by saying, “Sam, here’s the time.”

This time, Sam wore a suit and tie and performed a simpler version of “You Send Me,” with just a little backup singing. He focused on singing directly into the camera, and his natural charm and smile made him a hit. Right after the show, “You Send Me” climbed to number one on the Billboard Top 100, showing just how much people loved his performance.
